We all know the fish fry is near and dear to Milwaukee, rooted in well over a hundred years of both tradition brought over by the community’s European ancestors and access to plenty of freshwater fish. Another thing we all know is that us Milwaukeeans have So. Many. Options. for places to get this relished fish fry. So, we wanted to break down our favorites for you and also give a promise: we will be eating fish fry every Friday that we are able, and updating this list as we discover more. This is a living, breathing project and therefore what is on this list will change/grow accordingly.
The anatomy of the fish fry is most commonly this: Fried breaded freshwater fish, tartar sauce, coleslaw, rye bread with butter, a fried potato pancake with a homemade applesauce, and a lemon wedge for good measure. For us, there are a few important factors in how we rate a fish fry. Those things include quality and variety of the fish, quality/taste of the breading, sauce offerings and maybe most importantly, do they offer the coveted potato pancake?
